ABOUT THE ST. LAWRENCE
RIVER REGION
The host location for the St. Lawrence International
Junior Carp Tournament™ is along the
U.S. shores between Ogdensburg and Massena, N.Y. However, this section of the
St. Lawrence River also forms part of the international border between the
United States and Canada, making it a truly international venue.
This section of the majestic St. Lawrence River is renowned for some of the best carp fishing in the world!
With some of the swiftest and cleanest freshwater sources in the
world, carp thrive in the river and can grow to sizes that are some of the
largest anywhere around the globe! Meanwhile, the St. Lawrence is also home to
muskellunge, northern pike and dozens of other fish species that have kept
sportsmen and fishermen returning for generations!
The St. Lawrence River, believed to be the oldest river in the world,
combines the panorama and majesty of the river, the nearby Thousand
Islands, autumn leaves and beautiful sunsets. The breathtaking vistas,
among the most picturesque anywhere in the world, have
captivated generations from the earliest explorers to today's visitors and
year-round residents!
The St. Lawrence also has a great history and tradition. It is the
world's longest deep-draft inland shipping route. Hundreds of ships from
all over the world navigate its locks and can be seen quietly traveling
the river from late March till December each year. The world's largest
bi-national power-generating facility, the Robert Moses-Robert Saunders
Power Dam, generates hundreds of thousands of kilowatts of electricity
every day!
The St. Lawrence is also home to the picturesque Thousand Islands
region, dotted with large historic castles, extravagant seasonal homes and
a rich heritage. The river region has been home to Iroquois, Mohawk and
Algonquin Indian tribes. Today, St. Regis Mohawks continue to inhabit a large
reservation that straddles the St. Lawrence River, just east of Massena.
The early native Americans referred to the upper river and Thousand
Islands region as "The Garden of the Great Spirit." However, for
more than a century, it has been the summer playground for many of the
rich and famous.
The St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament™ is held along the shorelines in
five communities: Ogdensburg to the west, Lisbon, Waddington, Louisville
and Massena. Centrally located, the St. Lawrence International
Junior Carp Tournament™ headquarters will be located at Donald Martin Community Center in
Waddington, N.Y.
